COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASSES SUSPENDED AND POOL CLOSED
Governor Walz has signed an executive order closing all schools beginning on Wednesday, March 18 through Sunday, May 3. This is meant as a community mitigation strategy in response to COVID-19. During this time school districts are asked to plan for extended closing into the spring. EAST CENTRAL COMMUNITY ED CLASSES AND THE POOL WILL BE CANCELLED AND CLOSED FROM MARCH 16 - MAY 4.

Learn To Swim (LTS) CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

All WSI are Red Cross certified

LTS Level 1 (age 6 and up): Introduction to Water Skills Learn Basic water safety rules; how to use a life jacket; submerge mouth, nose and eyes; open eyes underwater and pick up a submerged object; swim on front and back using arm and leg actions; exhale underwater; float on front and back .

LTS Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Submerge entire head, glide on the front and back, tread water using arm and leg motions; bob in water, do a jellyfish float; swim using combined stroke on front and back

LTS Level 3: Stroke Development

Perform a reaching assist, submerge and retrieve an object, glide on front and back, back and front crawl, kneeling or standing dive; breathe side to side in horizontal position; survival float, back float; butterfly kick and body motion

LTS Level 4—Stroke Improvement

Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. • Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions • Swim under water • Feet first surface dive • Survival swimming • Front crawl and backstroke open turns • Tread water using 2 different kicks • Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly • Flutter and dolphin kicks on back

LTS Level 5—Stroke Refinement

Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. • Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke • Tuck and pike surface dives, submerge completely • Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming • Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly • Sculling

LTS Level 6-Swimming and Skill Proficiency

Refine strokes so students swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances; includes "menu options" - Personal Water Safety, Fitness Swimmer and Fundamentals of Diving

PRESCHOOL CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Parents/Child, (6 months – 2 years) – Parents must accompany their child in the water. Bring your child and let them get acquainted with the water. Learn the proper hold for your child in the water and play lots of fun water games. This class will include advanced techniques for the preschooler. The Pool will hopefully be 83 degrees but, please bring a t-shirt along with for your (preschool) child to wear if the pool feels cooler

Level 1 – Water Exploration (2- 3 years) -Child will learn to enter/ exit water on your own, blow bubbles, fully submerge face, and experience supported floating and kicking.

Level 2 – Learn Primary Skills (3 – 4 years) -Learn to float without support and recover to a vertical position. Work on front and back glides.

Level 3 – Learn Primary Skills (4 – 5 years) -Learn basic swimming propulsive skills. Learn to change direction, combine arm & leg actions on both front & back

The WSI Instructor may determine your child is better suited at another level; they will make that assessment on the first day of class.

Dynamic Flights is in Rush City, they are excited to pair with EC community ed to instruct. They teach recreational and competitive gymnastics. All area youth are welcome. Ages 3-5 - 6th grade! CLASSES WILL BE HELD AT EAST CENTRAL

Winter Session (Feb-April)

T'ai Chi Chih, Joy thru Movement, is a series of 19 movements and 1 pose. They are gentle movements and are done slowly. T'ai Chi Chih circulates and balances the intrinsic energy of the body. Many people have reported benefits doing this practice. The entire practice will be taught during this class series. Come and join us-all are welcome.

Age: Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Date: Mondays (Feb. 24, March 9, 16, 30, April 6)  and TUESDAY, March 3, from 4:30-6:00 pm in Elementary lunchroom.

Cost: $45.00 for 6 week session

Instructor: Nancy Werner-Azarski Nancy is an accredited T'ai Chi Chih teacher for the last twenty years. She has taught mostly in the metro area. And has been involved in the national and local groups of T'ai Chi Chih. She had worked as a Registered Nurse and is now retired.

SAFE SITTER BABYSITTING TRAINING

WeliaHealth will offer this program. Safe Sitter is an instructional course designed for ages 11 years and older who are seeking proper training to become babysitters. During the all-day course, students listen, practice and role play to learn about a variety of topics including: Safety precautions, CPR and care for a choking infant or child, Recognizing emergencies and how to call for help.

The course also covers the basics of child care, including how to feed and diaper an infant and behaviors to expect when dealing with each age group. Students must bring a bag lunch. Please fill out these forms to participate. Class size is limited to 20.

Come join the fun!  Let's enhance your physical endurance, power, and mobilize the joints to help improve balance.  We will utilize the physical properties of the water and functional movement patterns. Splash is suitable for all skill levels and is safe for non-swimmers. The pool provides many benefits when used for aerobic exercise and resistance training.  Cost includes 7 days of classes or pay the drop-in fee of $5 per time when your schedule allows. Ages 18 and up!

American Sign Language PART 2- CLASS CANCELLED ON 3/25/20

Geared toward anyone age 13 and older who is interested in learning ASL!

Come join us and learn the basics of American Sign Language. We will work to develop ASL vocabulary while also learning about Deaf culture. Come get started on a second language that is a lot of fun!

The instructor is Chrissy Cariveau. She is a Teacher of the Deaf/HH that works for Saint Croix Education District. She is fluent in American Sign Language. She has a degree in Deaf Education and one in Counseling from Gallaudet University. She has taught ASL at the high school level and at college level. Teaching American Sign Language is one of her passions and she is excited to share it with you!

Home Alone

The reality of being home alone can evoke fear and anxiety in many children. Whether left alone for an hour after school or several hours a day during the summer, children should feel comfortable being alone. This workshop for children will address several topics relating to being “Home Alone” including personal safety tips, tricky people, basic first aid, fire safety, handling the unexpected, internet safety, gun safety, dealing with loneliness and boredom, storm safety, dealing with siblings as well as trust and honesty. Students attend this class independently. Parents are encouraged to review the take home information and discuss it with their child. Students can bring a snack

Be Prepared, Not Scared - CANCELLED ON 3/25/20

Young children who are taught basic emergency concepts like how to call 911 can turn into Heroes in emergency situations. One of the most important things for them to know are basic first aid steps to follow in different circumstances. Class topics include recognizing an emergency and knowing what to do, calling 911, basic first aid techniques, personal safety tips, tricky people, gun safety and fire safety. Students attend this class independently. Parents are encouraged to review the take home information and discuss it with their child.

Driver 55+ Improvement Classes


Driver 55+ 4 hour REFRESHER COURSE

Save 10% on your Auto Insurance.

The MN Highway Safety and Research Center at St. Cloud State University developed this program specifically for Senior Drivers. '

It consists of 4 hours of lecture, discussion and educational videos.

There are no written or behind the wheel tests. Upon completion of the course, drivers over the age of 55 are eligible for a 10% discount on their auto insurance.

Cost is $22.00 per person

For those that are 55 yrs and over and have taken the initial class before. The class will explore changes in laws, the latest vehicle technology, and provide you with easy-to-use defensive driving tips. In addition, we will explore traffic safety and accident prevention. WHAT: Driver’s Education and Behind the Wheel

WHERE: At East Central High School room 308

INSTRUCTOR: Dwaine Palmer (classroom and behind the wheel)

DATES: June 8-12 and June 15-19 from 9:00 am -Noon

The state requires 30 hours of classroom work.

DATE FOR PARENT MEETING: Tuesday, June 16 in room 413 from 6:00-7:30

PARENT MEETING (required by state or additional driving hours required)

AGE REQUIREMENT: Students need to be 15 years of age by June 8, 2020 to take the class.

COST: 315.00

$100.00 is due at registration, balance paid in full by June 19, the blue card will not be issued until paid in full (So if your child does not turn 16 for a bit, you can wait to pay until the need to set up the behind the wheel time)

2019-20 East Central Activities Fee

The Activities fee is required to play in all sports offered at the 7th - 12 grade level at East Central, this includes the following: Fall Sports: Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Cheer;  Winter Sports: Basketball, Cheer, Hockey, One Act; Spring Sports: Track, Baseball, Softball, Trap Shooting, Golf.

EAST CENTRAL STUDENTS

East Central has set the activities fee for all sports except trap shooting AND hockey as follows: $50.00/athlete per sport. 

Hockey is 150.00/student. Trap Shooting is 105.00/student.

If the athlete participates in two sports, the third sport is free. (TRAP SHOOTING AND HOCKEY DO NOT COUNT AS A FREE SPORT).

HARVEST CHRISTIAN STUDENTS

Grades 9-12 the fee is 350.00 per sport. The agreements between the EC and Harvest Christian stated the Harvest Christian SCHOOL would pay 300.00 of the fee and the Harvest Christian PARENTS would pay the additional 50.00.  The third sport is FREE (this does not include hockey or trap shooting).

Grades 7-8 (Junior High). This fee is $50.00/student per sport. The third sport is FREE (this does not include hockey or trap shooting)

You may now pay online with a credit card through Community Education.

ATHLETIC FEE IS DUE PRIOR TO THE FIRST PRACTICE OF THE SEASON - Students are unable to participate in any games until the fee has been received.

Be sure you also have your MSHSL form filled out for the year and your athlete's physical is up to date.
