Dear Families and Caregivers,
Winter weather is quickly approaching. We will be watching the weather closely and will be thoughtful when contemplating how to respond to our harsh Minnesota weather.
We value the time we spend with our students and believe that the best way for them to learn is through holding regular school sessions. That said, we know that there may be times when we need to have a late start, early dismissal or not hold school in person due to the challenges of Minnesota winter. In most cases, we will use these opportunities to have an E-learning day.
E-learning days will look different depending on the age of your child. Elementary students will be bringing home a “bingo” card with activities to complete prior to the next in-person school day. They should bring these back to their teachers following the e-learning day. Students in high school (7-12) will need to log into their Schoology account. Assignments and class meetings will be posted in Schoology. Students are expected to attend any scheduled meetings and complete all assigned work. Class meetings, if scheduled, will follow the regular bell schedule.
I would encourage families of elementary students to hang their child's bingo card somewhere in which it will not get lost. For high school students, encourage your learner to start bringing home their Chromebook each night. That way they will be prepared to attend class and complete their schoolwork.
If school is closed due to weather, there will be no after-school activities. Games and practices will be canceled. There will be no kids club or community education classes that day. Normal activities will resume the following in-person school day.
The administrative team and our bus company will work together to determine if it is too difficult or dangerous to transport students to school via our regular bus routes. We will notify families as early as we can. Please remember that you, as caregivers, ultimately make the decision on your child's attendance at school.
We will announce school closings, late starts, and early dismissals through the following media outlets: The East Central School Website, Emails to parents (who have provided that information to the school), automated phone calls, Facebook, WCCO, Kare 11, NBC Duluth, WCMP, KBEK, and B105.
Respectfully,
Stefanie Youngberg
