English Teacher

I teach because I absolutely love helping students learn how to think and communicate those ideas. My classroom contains no desks, no white walls, and no fluorescent lights. I believe that the tangibles are less important than the intangibles. The active practice of community, the sharing of deep insights, and the beautiful journey of exploring the boundaries of critical thinking and creativity reside within my classroom.

I approach the practice of teaching English from the perspective of being a student of the English language as well. My reading interests range from critical essays to novels and everything in between. I enjoy JFK's Profiles in Courage as much as Sebastian Junger's Tribe, W. H. Auden's poetry  as much as Sherman Alexie's poetry, and Plato's Dialogues as much as Louise Erdrich's Love Medicine. The eclectic nature of my reading informs my writing. Though I experiment in all genres, creative nonfiction and poetry remain the forms I work in the most, and I have published pieces in both genres. Through both the study of texts and the practice of writing, words and the ideas they carry fascinate me.

At the end of the day, I simply want my students to understand the power of words and to possess the ability to wield them effectively.

I am in my sixth year teaching at East Central and currently teach English 10, Shakespeare, and ADSIS/Reading Lab 7, 8, 9, and 10.
